Bishop John H. Vandenburg, Part One: Edwin Markham and Three Things God Provides

For Part Two of this talk, click here.

Gorgeous fall day over here. The relief from the constant rotisserie burning that is summer where I live is palpable. With that relief comes a little more energy for thinking of others.

The next cultural quote comes from the talk by Bishop John H. Vandenburg, entitled 'My Brother's Keeper".

The Quote

"...Everyone has a need. Man does not stand alone. Edwin Markham puts the basic needs of man before us clearly and simply in these words:

“Three things must a man possess

if his soul would live

and know life’s perfect good—

“Three things would the all-supplying Father give—

bread, beauty and brotherhood.”

The Author

This quote in its entirety is a poem by Edwin Markham entitled "The New Trinity"

Poet Laureate of Oregon, was Mr. Markham, and my sixth cousin five times removed on my father's side. His most famous poem is called, "The Man With the Hoe". He also wrote a poem for the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, called "Lincoln, Man of the People".

Bread, beauty and brotherhood is like the perfect description of my favorite holiday ever, coming up soon. Can't wait!
